When Linda asked me to write a few thoughts about perseverance, I had to chuckle. Why? Because my entire life has been a continuous battle to keep on pushing. My high school and collegiate training, ups and downs in my career, friendships, finances, and of course, losing critical family members. I am sure that I am not alone in my trials. However, when it comes to the challenges in MY life, quitting simply isn’t an option.
During my days as an undergraduate student at Kent State University, I pledged a fraternity. The men of Omega Psi Phi encouraged pledges to learn two poems, “See It Through” (Edgar A. Guest) and “Don’t Quit.” During the most difficult periods in my life I quickly recite the line “…rest if you must, but don’t you quit.” Another memorable passage is, “…just remember you are facing what other men have met.”
My Challenge: To climb the corporate ladder.
My Approach: Network, professional development, and trust my ability and instincts.
My Inspiration: Anyone who refused to quit!
My Victory: I have led several operations with managerial success.
My Lesson: Not everyone who smiles at you wants to see you succeed.
My Prayer: “Lord, let me be your instrument so I might carry out your vision through my words, deeds, and actions.”
Quitting is never an option because you always have a chance to rebound. Time, pressure and anxiety will cause discomfort. However, pain is only temporary. Try to find ways to seek solutions and create solace and a safe place. If it were easy to succeed against the odds, everyone would be rich and famous. Chart your course, adjust when necessary, but by all means, keep on pushing! Pray Until Something Happens!
