My Challenge: I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease* in 2004. It was very difficult to find the right medication and help for my condition. Since my diagnosis I have literally felt like a medical guinea pig. Before the diagnosis I was an Olympic hopeful boxer and planned to become a professional. Everyone said I was finished. Doctors, friends, clients, ex-husband, everyone said I should give up on my athletic career and just give up on myself.
*(Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland. It often leads to reduced thyroid function, or hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism—the way the body uses energy—and affect nearly every organ in the body. Without enough thyroid hormone, many of the body’s functions slow down. )
My Approach: I went to various specialists and doctors looking for a cure. No one could figure out how to treat me. I became very rigorous in my nutrition and training. I decided not to listen to the detractors and held on to the promises that God gave us through the Bible. I continued to coach and train clients and refused to quit. I decided to Powerlift and promote and coach my ex-husband. He became the Strongest Man in the World, during my coaching and care of him. I also coached my daughter Jade Mendelson, who now holds a deadlift and bench press record.
My Inspiration: My inspiration is God and my children. My faith in Him and hope that we can overcome and triumph through anything with Him is my driving force to never give up. My children, Jade, Troy, and Jasmine inspire me to be the type of person I want them to be – champions, not only by name or in record books, but real champions in faith, in love, and life.
My Victory: My victory would be my three children. That they are strong, powerful, and positive forces in this world. My oldest daughter Jade not only holds four state and world records, but has true faith in God. She aspires to be the best no matter what challenges she may face. My son Troy is the same, he is a level nine competitive gymnast and trained and competed for the Olympic Center in Colorado Springs. He aspires to be an Olympic gymnast. No matter what obstacles and tragedies my children and I have faced hey all continue to persevere and strive to be the best they can possibly be.
Despite my illness in 2011 I bench pressed 330 pounds and set a United States Powerlifting Association record. It was amazing for me, considering everyone (minus my three children) said I would never do it. And this year (2014) the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs sponsored Jade and I for Olympic Weightlifting. Which is a miracle! At the age of 41 I was the oldest athelete ever sponsored!
My Lesson: Not to waste my time on those who do not appreciate or value me. To dedicate my life to those who are truly valuable, God and my three children.
My prayer: I pray that my three children and I will continue to inspire and encourage others not to give up on their dreams. I pray that we will continue to smash records and achieve victories athletically, scholastically, artistically, and by helping others in need.
