Yvonne’s Story

Where's the Love?
Where’s the Love?

Name: “Yvonne K”
Age: 36
Occupation:  Project Management
City/State:  Providence, RI
My Challenge:
‘Go Wash Your Face!’ ‘Why do you look so dirty?’ ‘What you’re wearing is just ugly!’ ‘Why do you have so many pimples?’ These are just some of the questions I was constantly asked growing up. They were supposedly used as a way to motivate me to try harder to ‘look better.’ What it actually did was create a person with no self esteem which is much worse than low self esteem. It wasn’t until I had a child of my own that I learned and decided that I would no longer allow my past or ignorance around me to determine my beauty! I learned the importance of practicing self love.

"Lovin' Me"
“Lovin’ Me”

My Approach:
As an adult I often heard how beautiful I was and how I just had the most gorgeous body. Unfortunately or fortunately it wasn’t until I heard the song ‘Gold’ by Britt Nicole early one Monday morning on the radio that I realized I needed to learn to love myself. From that moment on I decided I would no longer allow anyone or anything to define me. After that moment I made a decision to see myself as God sees me. He sees me as a one of a kind unique beauty! I am wonderfully made and there is no one like me. He sees me as a queen worth more than any precious metal known to man. I am beautiful and I absolutely Love Myself! And I tell myself this every moment I can.

"Speak Love"
“Speak Love”

I bet that sounds absolutely self righteous doesn’t it? That may be how you feel, but for someone who grew up not being able to look herself in the mirror without crying, for someone who felt so horrible about herself that whenever in public she would look down, for someone who has made entirely too many decisions based on the need to feel loved, and for someone who was ridiculed to the point where she expected it and believed the ridicule, loving herself, realizing her beauty is not only unique it is simply a profound breakthrough. So, for every hurtful memory I tell myself  that ‘I absolutely love me. I love every part of the physical me God has blessed me with.’

My Inspiration: I have been blessed with a beautiful, talented, smart child and my child inspires me to be the absolute best I can be. My child gives me a fresh start and provides me with the opportunity to express what real love is by loving myself. My child also gives me the opportunity to instill self worth by celebrating their beauty, uniqueness, talent and accomplishments. I also have the opportunity to celebrate the small things with my child, because all things are important when it comes to self love. As I spent the majority of my life having absolutely no love for myself, it is something I have to consciously do, so I have found some quotes that I really love.Young black african woman artistic closeup face beauty portrait with dramatic lighting “You don’t become what you want; you become what you believe.”  (Oprah Winfrey) “Whatever we believe about ourselves and our ability comes true for us.”  (Susan L. Taylor)

“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”  (II Corinthians 7:10)

My Victory:
I have to admit I still I have a ways to go when it comes to completely loving myself. It’s a journey and I have come so very far. I can truly say without hesitation that I have self love. I look at myself, eye to eye in the mirror and I absolutely love my curves, I love my skin tone, I love my hair, my shape, my flaws, and most of all myself. WOW!!!
My Lesson:
It doesn’t matter how much you have physically in this world, if you do not love yourself, there is no way you can fully appreciate or experience what God has in store for you. As I learn to fully appreciate the blessings God has poured into creating me I realize it is absolutely amazing what I will accomplish!

“Fearfully and Wonderfully Made”

My Prayer:
To continue to grow in Christ. This growth will feed my ability to love myself in a way that is is 100% natural and this natural ability to love myself will be instilled in my child in a way that not only pleases God but helps my child to realize that the sky is the limit.
